DeKalb/Sycamore Chambers raise $20,000 and conclude memorial fund; encourage donations to the NIU Foundation’s February 14 Fund

(March 5, 2008) – The DeKalb/Sycamore community has come together to embrace Northern Illinois University and one another in the wake of the tragedy that occurred Feb. 14, on the NIU campus.  People in the community immediately asked how they could help, reaching out in numerous ways to provide comfort and assistance.

The DeKalb/Sycamore Community Memorial Fund was quickly established to allow a vehicle for members of the community to donate funds to help.   In the course of 20 days, approximately $20,000 was raised.

The Chambers are grateful to everyone who made a contribution to the fund, and believe the fund has met its goal of providing an immediate path for community members to reach out and offer assistance.  The fundraising effort is now complete.  The Chambers will return to their work of helping the business community unite and succeed.

The money that has been raised will be held at the DeKalb County Community Foundation and will be turned over to the NIU Foundation once the university has made a decision regarding a fitting memorial to the tragedy.

“This is a generous community,” said Chuck Siebrasse, executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce

“We encourage everyone who still wishes to give to direct their contributions to the NIU Foundation’s February 14 Fund, which will be used to give scholarships to deserving students in the name of the five students who lost their lives during the tragedy.”

“We can’t think of a more appropriate way to honor the memories of these students than to provide scholarships for others,” said Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.
“We are grateful to the many community members who have given so much over the last 20 days.   We are exceedingly proud of this community.”  Tho se who wish to make a contribution to the February 14 fund may do so online at http://www.niu.edu/memorial/scholarships.shtml or by calling 1-877-GIV2NIU.
