2010 District 428 Annual Report

The District 428 Stakeholder-Driven Strategic Plan (2008-2013)
District 428 will continue to have high expectations for student achievement. We will promote continual improvement and achieve our mission by providing clear and understandable information about factors that will drive success. Success is dependent upon the willingness of stakeholders to continue to support the district.  That willingness to support the district is determined to a great extent by how well students learn.  Student learning is a product of the quality of educational experiences in school.  The quality of educational experiences is directly proportional to the capacity and capabilities of teachers to create quality learning experiences.

Student Learning Targets

By 2013, at least 93 percent of the student population and all ethnic and economic subgroups of students who have been in the district for two or more school years will…

  • Meet or exceed all state learning standards in reading.
  • Meet or exceed all state learning standards in mathematics.
  • Meet or exceed all state learning standards in writing.
  • Use appropriate problem solving strategies and tools to solve academic and interpersonal problems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with diverse groups of students.
  • Provide 40 hours of community service prior to graduation as part of being a community citizen. Students identified with disabilities will meet grade level standards and/or IEP goals.

What makes Montessori Education unique?

  1. The "Whole Child" Approach.  The primary goal is to help each child reach full potential in all areas of life.
  2. The "Prepared Environment."  In order for self-directed learning to take place, the whole learning environment - room, materials and social climate - must be supportive to the learner.
  3. The Montessori Materials.  Dr. Montessori's observations of the kinds of things that children enjoy and go back to repeatedly led her to design a number of multi-sensory, sequential and self-correcting materials that facilitate the learning of skills and lead to learning of abstract ideas.
  4. The Teacher.  Originally called a "Directress," the Montessori Teacher functions as a designer of the environment, resource person, role model, demonstrator, record-keeper, and meticulous observer of each child's behavior and growth.
How does it work?
We operate on the principle of freedom within limits.  This equipment is 30 years old because of these ground rules and quality of equipment.  For the younger learner, the equipment is visible so they can see it and use it.  For the older learner, equipment is not visible so they can think what they need to learn and collect the materials necessary to do it.  The room is uncluttered and child friendly.

The multi-year span provides a family-like grouping where learning can take place naturally.  Because of Montessori's peer group learning, there is often more conversation - language experiences.
